How Often Should I Get a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are effective, non-surgical treatments that drastically help brighten the skin and rid your appearance of imperfections. Without extensive downtime or side effects, a chemical peel can dramatically rejuvenate your skin and target problematic areas on your skin.

If you’re considering chemical peels to enhance the appearance of your skin, you may be wondering how often you’ll need to undergo this aesthetic treatment. The frequency of receiving a chemical peel will heavily depend on your skin type, the type of peel, and your desired results.

Chemical Peels Depths

The depth of a chemical peel impacts how deeply it penetrates your skin. The deeper the chemical peel, the less often you’ll need to return for repeat treatments.

  • Light peels

Light chemical peels target the epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. This can help improve the appearance of fine lines, acne, uneven skin tone, and dryness.

Since light chemical peels don’t penetrate the deeper layers of the skin, you can receive one every month or so. By having routine light chemical peels, it will encourage a healthy skin cell cycle and ensure that your skin has a bright, healthy glow.

  • Medium peels

Medium chemical peels target the epidermis and the upper portion of the dermis, which is the skin’s middle layer. Since this type of chemical peel penetrates deeper into the skin, it can resolve more significant skin damage, including wrinkles, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.

It’s generally recommended for patients to receive medium-depth chemical peels every 3 to 9 months to maintain the desired results.

  • Deep peels

Deep chemical peels penetrate the skin deeper than either light or medium peels. While deep peels aren’t the right choice for everyone, they can dramatically improve the appearance of deep scarring, wrinkles, and discoloration.

Since deep chemical peels target the deep layers of the skin, you shouldn’t have them as often. You may only need to have a deep chemical peel every few years, and some deep chemical peels can only be performed once to prevent skin damage.
